"It is widely how effective the German national team are in penalty shootouts but it seems that the country’s domestic league competition was not the place to go to see a high-standard of spot kicks in 2006-07. With the Spanish season now finally completed, Opta can examine the penalty records of each of Europe’s five major leagues, and the results make interesting reading.

Italy’s Serie A was the division with the most penalties, 133, while Spain’s Primera Liga and England’s Premiership also made it into three figures. Nevertheless, Italy was the only league to see 100 penalties scored, five of them hitting the back of the net on the final day of the season.

Spain was the only division to see more than 80% of its spot-kicks turned into goals and it is on this ranking that the Bundesliga fell some way short, with only 69% of the 67 penalties rippling the goal nets in Germany last season.

Looking at individual clubs, Premiership side Arsenal were awarded the most penalties, 12, with Spanish pair Racing and Sevilla in second place with 11 each. The only German side to rank highly was TSV Alemannia Aachen who saw the referee point to the spot in their favour nine times. "
